AVENUE Q K.O’S THE COMPETITION
In a repeat of its achievements at the 2004 TONY awards in New York, where Avenue Q won Best Musical, Avenue Q has beaten all the competition to walk away with the Variety Club Award 2006. The Variety Club gives only one award for theatre and Avenue Q was selected above all the other musicals that opened this year. Announced at a ceremony at the Savoy Hotel on Sunday 19th November, the Award was collected by the entire cast.
On December 4th with an extended appearance at this year’s Royal Variety Performance where the entire company will perform several numbers from the show including the hilarious, It Sucks To Be Me, The Internet Is For Porn, Special and For Now.
Last night Naoko Mori from BBC’s TORCHWOOD maked her debut in the role of Christmas Eve, taking the place of Ann Harada who has performed the role since the show opened in London on June 1st and who originated the part on Broadway.
The cast for the London production have won great acclaim for their performances, bringing the puppets to life with great energy, touching sensitivity and above all genuine hilarity.
AVENUE Q is not the most upmarket of New York streets, and is about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic alliance of humans
and puppets!
The cast includes Jon Robyns as ‘Princeton’ and ‘Rod’, Simon Lipkin as ‘Nicky’ and ‘Trekkie Monster’, Julie Atherton as ‘Kate Monster’ and ‘Lucy The Slut’, Giles Terera as ‘Gary Coleman’, Naoko Mori as ‘Christmas Eve’, Clare Foster as ‘Mrs T.’ and Sion Lloyd as ‘Brian’. The cast also includes Luke Evans, Matthew J Henry, Gloria Onitiri, Jacqui Sanchez , Gabriel Vick and Yanle Zhong.
AVENUE Q is the creation of a host of talented young 30-something theatre artists. AVENUE Q has music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; and directed by Jason Moore. AVENUE Q has puppets conceived and designed by Rick Lyon; musical supervision by Stephen Oremus, and choreography by Ken Roberson. AVENUE Q's scenic design is by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Acme
